Cefixime trihydrate
Indications/Uses
Infections due to sensitive gram +ve & -ve bacteria eg, Salmonella typhi, E. coli, Proteus mirabilis, Neisseria gonorrhoea, S. pneumoniae, H. influenzae, Strep pyogenes, Moraxella catarrhalis.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Adult 200-400 mg daily as single dose or in 2 divided doses. Childn >6 mth & <50 kg 8 mg/kg daily as single dose or in 2 divided doses.
Administration
May be taken with or without food.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity to cefixime or other cephalosporins.
Special Precautions
Individuals w/ history of GI disease particularly colitis; marked impaired renal function as well as those undergoing continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis & hemodialysis. Severe renal impairment (CrCl <20 mL/min). Not to be used during pregnancy & lactation.
Adverse Reactions
Diarrhea & stool changes.
Drug Interactions
Elevated level of carbamazepine. Increased prothrombin time w/ or w/o clinical bleeding w/ warfarin & other anticoagulants.
