Ascorbic acid
Indications/Uses
Prevention & treatment of vit C deficiencies. Maintenance of healthy skin, gums & teeth, bones, blood vessel walls & other connective tissues. Strengthen immune system. Increased body resistance against stress & common infections.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Administration
May be taken with or without food.
Special Precautions
Hyperoxaluria. May induce tolerance & cause diarrhea if taken in large doses. Avoid large doses during pregnancy. False -ve tests for glucose in urine & blood in stools.
Adverse Reactions
Large doses: Diarrhea, oxaluria, uricosuria, formation of renal Ca oxalate calculi especially urinary stone former patients. Rebound scurvy when abruptly stopped on high long-term intakes. Erosion of the enamel or hemodialysis on patients w/ G6PD deficiency during prolonged use of large doses.
Drug Interactions
Adverse reactions w/ aspirin, NSAIDs, tetracyclines, nitrates, warfarin, estrogen.
