Piracetam
Indications/Uses
Adjunct in the treatment of myoclonus of cortical origin. Dementia.
Dosage/Direction for Use
7.2 g daily, increased by 4.8 g daily every 3 or 4 days up to max of 20 g daily, given in 2 or 3 divided doses.
Administration
May be taken with or without food.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity to piracetam & other pyrrolidone derivatives. Patients w/ cerebral hemorrhage; suffering from Huntington's chorea; ESRD (renal CrCl <20 mL/min).
Special Precautions
Should not be given to patients w/ hepatic or severe renal impairment. Do not w/draw abruptly. Contains FD&C yellow #5 (tartrazine) which may cause allergic type reactions (including bronchial asthma) in certain susceptible persons. Should not be used during pregnancy unless clearly necessary. Should not be used during breastfeeding or discontinue breastfeeding during treatment.
Adverse Reactions
Insomnia or somnolence, wt gain, hyperkinesias, nervousness & depression.
Drug Interactions
Increased prothrombin time in patient who had been stabilized on warfarin. Reports of confusion, irritability & sleep disorder w/ thyroid extr (specifically T3 + T4).
