Metformin HCl

Indications/Uses

NIDDM (type 2 DM) particularly in obese & juvenile diabetics in whom diet alone has failed as monotherapy. Adjunct to diet & exercise to improve glycemic control in patients w/ type II diabetes.

Dosage/Direction for Use

Individualized dosage. Initially 500 mg once daily, may be increased in increments of 500 mg wkly. Max: 2,000 mg once daily, consider trial of 1,000 mg bid.

Overdosage

View Normax overdosage for action to be taken in the event of an overdose.

Administration

Should be taken with food: Take w/ or after meals. Swallow whole, do not chew/crush.

Contraindications

Hypersensitivity. Renal or hepatic failure, alcoholism, NIDDM complicated by severe ketosis & acidosis, diabetic pre-coma & coma, patients undergoing surgery, after severe trauma or during infections, COPD, CHD, cardiac failure, peripheral vascular disease, hypocalcemia. Pregnancy.

Adverse Reactions

Nausea, diarrhea, gastric pain, constipation, vomiting, metallic taste in the mouth; rash, pruritus, urticaria, erythema & flushing; headache & dizziness. Impaired GI absorption of vit B₁₂ & folic acid (long-term use).

Drug Interactions

Drug interaction w/ phenprocoumon, hyperglycemics (eg, thiazides, corticosteroids), alcohol, furosemide, nifedipine & cationic drugs (amiloride, digoxin, morphine, procainamide, quinidine, quinine, ranitidine, triamterene, trimethoprim, cimetidine & vancomycin). May reduce absorption w/ acarbose & guar gum.
