Mupirocin

Indications/Uses

Treatment of primary bacterial skin infections eg, impetigo, folliculitis, furunculosis, & ecthyma; bacterial infections secondary to skin conditions eg, eczema, atopic dermatitis, herpes, epidermolysis bullosa, & ichthyosis. Insect bites & infected minor traumatic lesions eg, skin ulcers, burns, cuts, abrasions, small lacerations, sutured wounds. Prevent bacterial contamination in minor burns, biopsy sites, incisions & other clean lesions. Prevent development of infection & permit wound healing in abrasions, minor cuts & wounds.

Dosage/Direction for Use

Apply a small amount on the affected area tid for 10 days.

Overdosage

View Mupicin overdosage for action to be taken in the event of an overdose.

Contraindications

Hypersensitivity. Not for ophth or intranasal use. Do not use at the site of central venous cannulation; & in conditions where large amount of polyethylene glycol may be absorbed eg, open wounds, extensive burns, broken skin, especially in patients w/ moderate or severe renal impairment.

Special Precautions

Avoid contact w/ eyes. Long-term use may result in overgrowth of non-susceptible organisms, including fungi. Discontinue treatment if sensitivity or severe local irritation occurs; if symptoms do not improve or new symptoms appear w/in 3-5 days; in case of pseudomembranous colitis or severe skin reactions or allergies. Pregnancy & lactation.

Drug Interactions

Incompatible w/ salicylic acid 2%. Do not mix w/ water-containing vehicles eg, coal tar soln. Do not mix w/ other lotions, creams or oint on the infected area to avoid reducing the effectiveness & stability of mupirocin.
