Indications/Uses
Chronic treatment of asthma in adults & ped patients ≥12 mth. Symptomatic relief of allergic rhinitis (seasonal allergic rhinitis in adults & ped patients ≥2 yr, & perennial allergic rhinitis in adults & ped patients ≥6 mth).
Dosage/Direction for Use
Asthma & allergic rhinitis 1 tab daily in the evening. Prevention of exercise-induced bronchoconstriction (EIB) Patient ≥15 yr 1 tab daily as single dose at least 2 hr before exercise for prevention of EIB. Additional dose should not be taken w/in 24 hr of a previous dose. Patient already taking 1 tab daily for another indication (including chronic asthma) should not take an additional dose to prevent EIB.
Administration
May be taken with or without food.
Contraindications
Special Precautions
Not indicated for use in the reversal of bronchospasm in acute asthma attacks, including status asthmaticus. Montelukast therapy can be continued during acute asthma exacerbations. Should not be abruptly substituted for inhaled or oral corticosteroids. Not to be used as monotherapy for the therapy & management of EIB. Patients w/ known aspirin sensitivity should continue avoidance of aspirin or NSAIDs during treatment. Be alert to eosinophilia, vasculitic rash, worsening pulmonary symptoms, cardiac complications, &/or neuropathy.
Adverse Reactions
Dyspepsia, abdominal pain, rash, dizziness, headache, fatigue, fever, trauma, cough, nasal congestion.
Drug Interactions
Caution w/ potent CYP3A4 inducers (eg, phenytoin, phenobarb, or rifampicin). Reports of peripheral oedema w/ prednisone. Reduced peak serum conc & AUC w/ phenobarb.
