Indications/Uses
Painful & inflammatory conditions & relief of mild to moderate pain including headache, dental pain, post-op & postpartum pain, dysmenorrhea. Musculoskeletal & joint disorders (eg, OA & RA), menorrhagia, soft tissue injuries, Still's disease.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Acute pain Adult & childn >14 yr Initially 500 mg followed by 250 mg every 6 hr as needed. Duration: No longer than 7 days. Childn 25 mg/kg daily. Duration: No longer than 7 days. Primary dysmenorrhea Initially 500 mg, starting at onset of bleeding & associated symptoms, followed by 250 mg every 6 hr. Duration: No more >2-3 days.
Administration
Should be taken with food.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity to mefenamic acid or any other NSAIDs. Patients w/ history of stroke (CVA), heart attack (MI), CABG, uncontrolled HTN, CHF NYHA II-IV. Patients w/ previous or active ulceration or chronic inflammation of either upper & lower GI tract.
Special Precautions
Discontinue therapy if patient develops diarrhea or rash. Do not take for pain for >10 days or for fever for >3 days. Caution in patients w/ cardiac, liver & renal disease; use lowest effective dose & monitor renal & liver functions. Should not be given in patients w/ inflammatory bowel disease & nursing mothers. May cause problems in unborn child or complications during delivery.
Adverse Reactions
GI disturbances including diarrhea, nausea, vomiting & abdominal pain. Headache, drowsiness, nervousness; thrombocytopenia, leukopenia, pancytopenia, agranulocytosis, bloody dyscrasias; anorexia; skin rashes & other allergic reactions.
