Vitamin A: Daily intake of more than 10,000 IU or weekly intake in excess of 25,000 IU may result in hypervitaminosis, signs of which include fatigue, lethargy (lack of energy), irritability, depression, loss of appetite, abdominal discomfort, nausea, vomiting, mild fever and excess sweating. Other symptoms of Vitamin A toxicity include dizziness, drowsiness, blurred or double vision, headache, insomnia, lack of muscle coordination, osteoporosis, osteosclerosis, skin disorders (dryness, itching, rashes) and liver damage. Signs and symptoms may vary among different individuals. Excessive Vitamin A intake during pregnancy may lead to birth defects such as cleft palate, heart abnormalities and brain malformations.
Vitamin C: Prolonged excessive Vitamin C intake (more than 2 g per day) may lead to nausea, diarrhea, abdominal cramps, nose bleeds, elevated serum glucose levels, gastrointestinal obstruction and esophagitis.
Vitamin E: Prolonged excessive daily intake of Vitamin E (greater than 1000 mg- equivalent to 1,490 IU) may be associated with increased bleeding tendency in Vitamin K-deficient patients. Signs and symptoms include dizziness, headache, vascular disorder, diarrhea and myopathy.
Zinc: Prolonged excessive dose of Zinc (toxic dose is greater than 200 mg daily) may have the following signs and symptoms: gastrointestinal cramps, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, loss of appetite, headache, lethargy, muscle pain and fever. Prolonged Zinc supplementation may interfere in the absorption of copper and iron, and it may also cause anemia.
