Folic acid

Indications/Uses

Prophylaxis & treatment of megaloblastic anemia associated w/ folic acid deficiency, as in the anemias of pregnancy, hemolytic anemia, exfoliative skin disease, pellagra, sprue, alcoholism & that following gastrectomy & in pernicious anemia. Prevention of neural tube defects, including spina bifida & anencephaly; to correct decreased folate levels when taking MTX, trimethoprim, sulfamethoxazole, phenytoin, OC pills. Prophylaxis & treatment of diseases eg, colorectal carcinoma, ulcerative colitis, dysplasia, sickle cell diseases, hereditary spherocytosis & homocysteinemia.

Dosage/Direction for Use

Prophylaxis & treatment of anemia associated w/ folic acid deficiency 1 tab daily. Prevention of neural tube defects in women at high risk 1-4 tab daily, taken at least 1 mth before conception through the 1st trimester of pregnancy.

Administration

May be taken with or without food.

Contraindications

May mask hematological abnormalities in patients w/ vit B₁₂ deficiency.

Special Precautions

Should not be given alone or in conjunction w/ inadequate amounts of vit B₁₂ in the treatment of pernicious anemia. May partially reverse the antiepileptic effects of phenobarb, diphenylhydantoin & primidone.

Drug Interactions

May partially reverse the antiepileptic effects of phenobarb, phenytoin & primidone. May interfere metabolism of antineoplastic agents eg, MTX, OC pills, anti-TB agents, analgesics/pain relievers eg, NSAIDs, antibiotics (tetracycline), anticonvulsants (phenytoin, carbamazepine), antacids, epoetin, estrogens, pyrimethamine, triamterene, trimethoprim, sulfonamides & Zn supplements.
