Allopurinol
Indications/Uses
Primary or secondary hyperuricemia, uric acid nephropathy. Adjuvant treatment of gout; recurrent uric stone formation. Prophylaxis to prevent tissue deposition, renal calculi or uric acid nephropathy in patients w/ malignancies who are receiving cancer chemotherapy which causes elevated serum uric acid levels.
Dosage/Direction for Use
100-300 mg daily in moderately severe cases. Take larger amounts in divided doses.
Administration
Should be taken with food.
Contraindications
Idiopathic hemochromatosis. Hypersensitivity, asymptomatic hyperuricemia. Pregnancy & lactation.
Special Precautions
Hepatic & renal impairment (reduce dose).
Adverse Reactions
Skin rash (discontinue), blood dyscrasias, vasculitis. Rarely, toxic epidermal necrolysis, Stevens-Johnson syndrome, thrombocytopenia, allopurinol hypersensitivity syndrome.
Drug Interactions
Mercaptopurine, azathioprine, anticoagulants.
