Cefuroxime
Indications/Uses
Treatment of susceptible infections: Bone & joint infections, bronchitis (other lower resp tract infections), gonorrhea, meningitis, otitis media, peritonitis, pharyngitis, sinusitis, skin infections (including soft tissue infections), & UTI. Prophylaxis for surgical infection.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Uncomplicated UTI 125 mg bid. Resp tract infection 250-500 mg bid. Childn ≥3 mth 125 mg bid or 10 mg/kg bid. Max: 250 mg daily. Otitis media Childn >2 yr 250 mg bid or 15 mg/kg bid. Max: 500 mg daily. Pneumonia or acute exacerbations of chronic bronchitis Adult 1.5 g bid or 750 mg bid, respectively, in parenteral route followed by oral cefuroxime 500 mg bid in each case. Lyme disease Adult 500 mg bid for 20 days. Uncomplicated gonorrhea 1 g as single dose.
Administration
May be taken with or without food.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity to cefuroxime or cephalosporins.
Special Precautions
Patients who have experienced allergic reaction to penicillins or other β-lactams. Immediately discontinue & initiate adequate emergency measures in case of severe hypersensitivity reactions. Risk of Jarisch-Herxheimer reaction; overgrowth of Candida & other non-susceptible microorganism (prolonged use); pseudomembranous colitis; development of +ve Coombs' test; false -ve ferricyanide test. Patients w/ renal impairment. Monitor renal & haematological status especially during prolonged & high dose therapy. Pregnancy & lactation.
Adverse Reactions
GI disturbances including diarrhea, nausea & vomiting. Mild to moderate hearing loss in childn.
Drug Interactions
Reduced renal clearance w/ probenecid.
