Indications/Uses

Prevention & treatment of damages due to faulty/deficient protein metabolism in chronic renal insufficiency in connection w/ limited protein in food of 40 g daily for adults, usually in patients whose GFR <25 mL/min.

Dosage/Direction for Use

Adult (70 kg) 4-8 tab tid. Duration: As long as GFR <25 mL/min & concomitantly dietary protein is restricted to ≤40 g daily.

Overdosage

Special Precautions

Presence of hereditary phenylketonuria. Regularly monitor serum Ca level. Monitor serum phosphate levels in case of concomitant administration of Al hydroxide. Ensure sufficient calorie intake. Pregnancy & lactation. Ped patients.

Drug Interactions

May cause or aggravate elevated serum Ca levels w/ Ca-containing drugs. Take drugs that form hard soluble compd w/ Ca eg, tetracyclines, quinolones (eg, ciprofloxacin & norfloxacin), drugs containing Fe, fluoride or estramustine) w/ interval of at least 2 hr. Increased risk of arrhythmia w/ cardioactive glycosides. Reduce dose in case of Al hydroxide administration.
