Indications/Uses

Prevention & therapy of damage due to faulty or deficient protein metabolism in chronic renal insufficiency in connection w/ limited protein in food (≤40 g/day), usually in patients w/ GFR <25 mL/min.

Dosage/Direction for Use

Adult (70 kg) 4-8 tab tid. Duration: As long as GFR <25 mL/min & concomitantly, dietary protein is restricted to ≤40 g daily.

Overdosage

Drug Interactions

May cause or aggravate elevated serum Ca levels w/ Ca-containing drugs. Take drugs that form hard soluble compd w/ Ca eg, tetracyclines, quinolones (eg, ciprofloxacin & norfloxacin), drugs containing Fe, fluoride or estramustine) w/ interval of at least 2 hr. Increased risk of arrhythmia w/ cardioactive glycosides if there is elevated serum Ca levels during therapy. Reduce dose of Al hydroxide administration, due to improved uremic symptoms during therapy.
