Isosorbide-5-mononitrate
Indications/Uses
Prophylactic treatment of angina pectoris.
Dosage/Direction for Use
60 mg once daily in the morning, may be increased to 120 mg once daily in the morning. May initiate treatment w/ 30 mg for the 1st 2-4 days to minimize the possibility of headache.
Administration
May be taken with or without food: May be divided along the score-line. Whole tabs & divided halves must be swallowed whole, do not chew/crush.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity. Shock, hypotension, constrictive cardiomyopathy & pericarditis. Must not be given w/ phosphodiesterase type 5 inhibitors (eg, sildenafil).
Special Precautions
Not indicated for the relief of acute attacks. Patients w/ severe cerebral arteriosclerosis & hypotension. Patients should be advised to determine how they react to the medicine as this may develop dizziness when used for the first time. Pregnancy & lactation.
Adverse Reactions
Hypotension, tachycardia; headache, dizziness; nausea.
Drug Interactions
Potentiated vasodilatory effect w/ phosphodiesterase type 5 inhibitors (eg, sildenafil).
