Indications/Uses
Granules for oral soln: Treatment of concomitant disease & sequelae due to impaired hepatic detoxification activity (eg, in cirrhosis of the liver) w/ symptoms of latent & manifest hepatic encephalopathy. Conc for IV infusion: Treatment of hyperammonemia due to acute & chronic liver disease eg, liver cirrhosis, fatty liver, hepatitis, especially for the treatment of incipient disturbances of consciousness (pre-coma) or neurological complications (hepatic encephalopathy).
Dosage/Direction for Use
Granules for oral soln 1-2 sachet, taken up to tid. Conc for IV infusion Up to 4 amp daily. Incipient clouding of consciousness (pre-coma) or clouding of consciousness (coma) Up to 8 amp may be given in 24 hr, depending on severity of the condition. Max infusion rate: 5 g/hr. For venous tolerability, no >6 amp should be dissolved per 500 mL infusion soln.
Administration
Should be taken with food: Granules for oral soln: Take w/ or after meals. Dissolve in a glass of water, tea or juice.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity. Severely impaired renal function.
Special Precautions
May impair ability to drive & use machines. Avoid use during pregnancy & lactation. No data available for use in childn. Granules for oral soln: Should not be given to patients w/ rare hereditary problems of fructose intolerance. Consider fructose content in DM patients. Long-term use may be harmful to the teeth (caries). Conc for IV infusion: Monitor serum & urine urea levels at high doses. Infusion rate must be adjusted in patients w/ substantially impaired liver function to prevent nausea & vomiting.
Adverse Reactions
Granules for oral soln: Uncommon: Nausea, vomiting, stomachache, flatulence, diarrhea. Conc for IV infusion: Uncommon: Nausea.
