Famotidine
Indications/Uses
FC tab: Short-term treatment of active duodenal ulcer, active benign gastric ulcer, GERD. Maintenance therapy for duodenal ulcer after healing of an active ulcer. Pathological hypersecretory conditions (eg, Zollinger-Ellison syndrome, multiple endocrine adenomas. Powd for inj: Hospitalized patients w/ pathological hypersecretory conditions or intractable ulcer. Short-term treatment of active duodenal ulcer, active benign gastric ulcer, GERD, pathological hypersecretory conditions (eg, Zollinger-Ellison syndrome, multiple endocrine adenomas, upper GI bleeding due to peptic ulcer, hemorrhagic gastritis). Control of stress-induced upper GI bleeding.
Dosage/Direction for Use
FC tab Adult Ulcer Treatment: 40 mg/day at bedtime or 20 mg bid for 4-8 wk depending on patient's response. Maintenance: 20 mg/day at bedtime. Childn 1-16 yr Initially 0.5 mg/kg/day, either in single dose at night or in 2 divided doses; up to 40 mg/day. GERD Adult Treatment: 20 mg (1 tab in the morning & 1 tab at bedtime) for 6-12 wks or up to 40 mg bid if there is esophageal erosion or ulceration. Maintenance: 20 mg tab tid (1 tab in the morning & 1 tab at bedtime). Childn 1-16 yr 0.5 mg/kg bid up to 40 mg bid. Pathological hypersecretory conditions 20 mg every 6 hrs, increased & continued as long as clinically indicated; max: 800 mg/day. Powd for inj Adult Upper GI bleeding & pathologic hypersecretory states (eg, Zollinger-Ellison syndrome, multiple endocrine adenomas) or intractable ulcer 20 mg every 12 hr by IV inj or infusion or IM. Control of stress-induced upper GI bleeding 20 mg every 12 hr by IV inj or infusion or IM. Post-op stress: Administer for 3 days. Other physical stress: Administer for 7 days. Active duodenal ulcer 20 mg every 12 hr by IV inj or infusion. Active benign gastric ulcer 20 mg every 12 hr by IV inj or infusion. Childn 1-16 yr 0.5 mg/kg/day every 12 hr by IV inj or infusion. Max: 40 mg/day.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity to famotidine, other H2-receptor antagonists.
Special Precautions
Do not administer in cases of minor GI complaints. Monitor blood count & liver function. Avoid abrupt w/drawal in case of long-standing ulcer disease. Risk of community- or hospital-acquired pneumonia. Renal impairment. May impair ability to drive or operate machines. Pregnancy & lactation.
Adverse Reactions
Constipation, diarrhea, dizziness & headache.
Drug Interactions
May reduce uptake w/ antacids. Reduced absorption of atazanavir; ketoconazole & itraconazole; sucralfate. Inhibits renal tubular secretion w/ probenecid.
