Indications/Uses
Treatment of infections due to sensitive gm +ve & gm -ve bacteria.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Usual course of treatment: 5-14 days. Adult & childn >12 yr 400 mg daily as single dose. Childn <12 yr 8 mg/kg/day as single dose or in 2 divided doses, as 4 mg/kg every 12 hr; 10-12 yr 15 mL daily; 5-9 yr 10 mL daily; 1-4 yr 5 mL daily. Infant 6 mth-1 yr (should be calculated on mg/kg basis) 3.37 mL daily.
Administration
May be taken with or without food: May be taken w/ food or milk to reduce GI discomfort.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity to cephalosporins.
Special Precautions
Patients w/ renal impairment, history of allergy. Monitor renal & hematological status especially during prolonged & high-dose therapy. May interfere w/ Jaffe's method of measuring creatinine conc & produce falsely high values; cause +ve result to direct Coombs' test & false reaction for glucose using Cu reduction reactions. Pregnancy.
Adverse Reactions
Hypersensitivity reactions including skin rashes, urticaria, eosinophilia, fever, serum sickness-like reactions & anaphylaxis. GI disturbances especially diarrhea.
