Clobetasol propionate
Indications/Uses
Short course treatment of more resistant dermatoses eg, psoriasis (excluding widespread plaque psoriasis), recalcitrant eczema, lichen planus, discoid lupus erythematosus & other skin conditions which do not respond satisfactorily to less active corticosteroids.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Apply sparingly to affected area once daily or bid, until improvement occurs. Max dose: 50 g/wk. Max duration: 2 wk.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity. Rosacea, acne, perioral dermatitis, primary cutaneous viral (herpes simplex, chickenpox), fungal (candidiasis, tinea) & bacterial infections. Not recommended for childn <12 yr.
Special Precautions
Discontinue if irritation develops. Systemic absorption results in reversible hypothalamic pituitary adrenal axis suppression, manifestations of Cushing's syndrome, hyperglycemia & glucosuria. Institute appropriate antifungal or antibacterial agent in case of dermatological infections. Avoid contact w/ eyes. If applied to the eyelids, ensure that the prep does not enter the eye. Do not bandage, cover or wrap treated skin area. Should not be used extensively in pregnancy ie, in large amounts or prolonged periods.
Adverse Reactions
Localized burning & stinging sensation. Itching, skin atrophy, cracking & fissuring of the skin. Irritation, dryness, folliculitis, hypertrichosis, acneiform eruptions, hypopigmentation, perioral dermatitis, allergic contact dermatitis, maceration of the skin, secondary infection, striae & miliaria.
