Fosfomycin trometamol

Indications/Uses

Acute uncomplicated lower UTI (acute cystitis) in females ≥18 yr caused by E. coli & Enterococcus faecalis.

Dosage/Direction for Use

Adult Acute infection of lower urinary tract (cystitis, non-gonococcal urethritis) 3 g as a single dose. Elderly, bedridden patient & recurrent infections or infections due to Pseudomonas, Enterobacter, Indole + Proteus 2 doses at 24-hr interval.

Overdosage

View Fosfostal overdosage for action to be taken in the event of an overdose.

Administration

Should be taken on an empty stomach: Take on an empty stomach or about 2-3 hr after meals, preferably before bedtime & after emptying the bladder. Dissolve in a glass of water (50-75 mL) or in favorite non-alcoholic drink & consume soon after dissolving.

Contraindications

Hypersensitivity.

Special Precautions

Hypersensitivity reactions including anaphylaxis & anaphylactic shock. Antibiotic-associated diarrhea. Consider diagnosis of Clostridium difficile-associated diarrhea in patients who develop serious diarrhea during or after treatment. Not indicated in male patients w/ complicated UTI. Contains sucrose. Not recommended in patients w/ hereditary problems of fructose intolerance, glucose-galactose malabsorption or sucrose-isomaltase insufficiency. May cause dizziness which could affect ability to drive vehicles or use machines. Not recommended in patients w/ renal impairment (CrCl <10 mL/min). Pregnancy & lactation. Not to be given in childn <12 yr.

Drug Interactions

Lowered therapeutic effective serum & urine conc w/ metoclopramide & other drugs that increase GI motility. Increased anti-vit K antagonists activity w/ antibiotics (fluoroquinolones, macrolides, cyclins, co-trimoxazole & certain cephalosporins).
