Indications/Uses

Treatment & prevention of folate deficiency state. Protection against neural tube defects in the offspring of women of child-bearing potential & pregnant women. Treatment of folate deficient megaloblastic anaemia.

Dosage/Direction for Use

5 mg daily for 4 mth; up to 15 mg daily may be necessary in malabsorption states. Chronic haemolytic states Continued administration of 5 mg every 1-7 days may be necessary. Women of child-bearing potential Initially 4-5 mg daily before pregnancy & continued through the 1st trimester.

Administration

May be taken with or without food.

Special Precautions

Never to be given alone or in conjunction w/ inadequate amounts of vit B₁₂ for treatment of undiagnosed megaloblastic anaemia.

Metabolism may be affected by a number of drugs eg, anticonvulsants, OCs, anti-TB drugs, alcohol, & folic acid antagonist including aminopterin, MTX, pyrimethamine, trimethoprim & sulfonamides.
