Description
Methyl Salicylate + Menthol + Eugenol (FlanaxHot) is white to nearly white, smooth, soft cream with strong odor of methyl salicylate, homogenous and free from any separation; practically free from visible impurities.
Each gram of cream contains: Methyl Salicylate, USP 102 mg, Menthol, USP 54.35 mg, Eugenol, USP 13.65 mg.
Excipients/Inactive Ingredients: Sodium Lauryl Sulfate, Carbopol, Glyceryl Monostearates, Cithrol, Antifoam Emulsion, Sodium Hydroxide, Purified Water.
Action
Therapeutic Class: Topical Antirheumatics & Analgesics.
Pharmacology: Pharmacological Effects and Mechanism of Action: Provides relief by reducing inflammation, blocking pain signals, and creating a cooling or warming sensation that distracts from deeper pain.
Indications/Uses
Methyl Salicylate + Menthol + Eugenol (FlanaxHot) is used for the alleviation of pain associated with headaches, rheumatism, minor muscle and joint pains as well as inflammation caused by insect bites and itchiness.
Dosage/Direction for Use
This medication is for external use only.
To be applied 2-3 times per day.
Missed Dose: Apply the missed dose to affected area as soon as remembered. Skip the missed dose if it is almost time for the next scheduled dose. Do not apply in excess to make up for the missed dose.
Average duration of treatment: Good for 5 days at 1 g application x 3/day.
Overdosage
This medicine may be harmful if swallowed. If someone has overdosed, it could cause serious symptoms such as passing out or trouble breathing.
What to do when applied more than recommended dosage: If more than the recommended dose has been given, consult a health professional immediately.
Contraindications
Do not use this medicine if the patient: Has allergy to methyl salicylate, eugenol and/or menthol; has a wound at the affected area, or if the skin is injured or damaged.
Special Precautions
Do not apply near the eyes, mouth, nose, or genitals, and be careful not to touch those areas while the medication is on the patient's hands. If the patient does get the medication in those areas, flush with plenty of water. Wash the hands well before inserting contact lenses.
Do not apply this medication to skin that is injured or irritated (e.g. cut, scraped, sunburned).
Do not bandage or tightly wrap the affected area.
When to consult a doctor: Before using this product, consult a doctor or pharmacist if the patient is allergic to menthol or methyl salicylate; or to aspirin or other salicylates (e.g. salsalate); or if the patient has allergies. This product may contain inactive ingredients, which can cause allergic or other problems. Talk to the pharmacist for more details.
If the patient has any of the following health problems, consult the doctor or pharmacist before using this product; asthma, injured/irritated skin in the affected area, growths in the nose (nasal polyps).
Use In Pregnancy & Lactation
During the first 6 months of pregnancy, this medication should be used only when clearly needed. It is not recommended for use during the last 3 months of pregnancy due to possible harm to the unborn baby and problems with normal labor/delivery. Discuss the risks and benefits with the doctor.
It is not known whether this product passes into breast milk. Consult the doctor before breast-feeding.
Adverse Reactions
Redness, warmth, stinging, or burning on the application site may occur.
Unlikely but serious side effects: Blistering/swelling/severe redness at the application site, increased/unusual pain at the application site, nausea/vomiting, ringing in the ears.
Serious allergic reaction: Rash, itching/swelling (especially of the face/tongue/throat), severe dizziness, trouble breathing.
Drug Interactions
Anticoagulants (e.g. warfarin): Risk of their side effects may be increased by methyl salicylate/menthol cream.
Storage
Store at temperatures not exceeding 30°C.
Shelf-life: 36 months.
