Contents
Fe 100 mg [equiv to Fe (III) hydroxide polymaltose complex 333.33 mcg], folic acid (vit B9) 550 mcg
Indications/Uses
Treatment of Fe deficiency anemia during pregnancy, lactation & in anemia due to post-partum haemorrhage. Prevention of Fe deficiency anemia.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Treatment of Fe deficiency anemia 1 cap bid. Prevention of Fe deficiency anemia 1 cap once daily.
Administration
Should be taken on an empty stomach.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity. Fe overload eg, hemochromatosis, hemosiderosis. Disturbances in Fe utilization (lead & sideroblastic anemia, thalassemia). All anemias not caused by Fe deficiency eg, hemolytic anemia or megaloblastic anemia due to vit B12 deficiency.
Special Precautions
Anemia potentially caused by infections or tumors. Patients who receive repeated blood transfusions. Dark discolouration of faeces may occur. Reconsider treatment if therapy does not succeed (Hb increases by about 2-3 g/dL after 3 wk). Exclude possible vit B12 deficiency in anemic patients prior to treatment due to risk of irreversible neurological disorders. Not recommended in childn & adolescents ≤12 yr. Elderly.
Adverse Reactions
Faeces discoloration. Diarrhea, nausea, abdominal pain (including dyspepsia, epigastric discomfort, abdominal distension), constipation.
Drug Interactions
Fe: Reduced absorption w/ parenteral Fe prep. Folic acid: Increased metabolism of phenytoin leading to lower serum conc especially in folate-deficient patients. Haematopoietic response may be reduced w/ chloramphenicol in patients w/ folic acid deficiency.
