Not recommended in patients w/ ischaemic heart disease or CHF; greatly increased rate of urate formation (eg, malignant disease & its treatment, Lesch-Nyhan syndrome); concomitant treatment w/ mercaptopurine &/or azathioprine; organ transplant recipients. Immediately stop treatment if serious allergic/hypersensitivity reactions including SJS occur. Do not start treatment until an acute attack of gout has completely subsided. Gout flares may occur during initiation of treatment. Flare prophylaxis for at least 6 mth w/ an NSAID or colchicine is recommended at treatment initiation. Do not discontinue if a gout flare occurs during treatment. Perform LFTs prior to initiation of therapy & periodically thereafter based on clinical judgement. Caution in patients w/ alteration of thyroid function. Patients w/ rare hereditary problems of galactose intolerance, Lapp lactase deficiency or glucose-galactose malabsorption should not take this medicine. Should not be used during pregnancy & lactation.
