Fosfomycin trometamol

Indications/Uses

Acute bacterial cystitis & urethro-vesical syndrome, acute episodes of recurrent bacterial cystitis, aspecific bacterial urethritis. Asymptomatic bacteriuria in pregnancy. Post-op UTI. Prophylaxis of UTI during surgery & trans-urethral diagnostic maneuvers.

Dosage/Direction for Use

Adult Acute uncomplicated infection of low urinary tract (cystitis, non-gonococcal urethritis) 1 sachet in single daily administration. Prophylaxis of urinary infection after surgery or trans-urethral diagnostic maneuver 1 sachet 3 hr prior to surgery & 1 sachet 24 hr after 1st dose. Elderly, bed-ridden patient 2nd dose could be necessary 24 hr after 1st dose.

Overdosage

View Exelfos overdosage for action to be taken in the event of an overdose.

Administration

Should be taken on an empty stomach: Dissolve in ½ glass of water (at least 50 mL) & drink immediately preferably prior the night resting, after voiding bladder. Take 1 hr prior to or 2 hr after food ingestion.

Contraindications

Hypersensitivity. Patients w/ severe renal insufficiency (CrCl <10 mL/min) or those who undergone haemodialysis. Childn <12 yr.

Special Precautions

Never re-administer if hypersensitivity reactions occur. Not recommended in patients w/ fructose intolerance, glucose-galactose malabsorption or sucrase-isomaltase insufficiency. Pregnancy & lactation.

Drug Interactions

Reduced oral absorption w/ metoclopramide. Absorption may be delayed w/ food. Effect may be reduced w/ medicines that increase the movement of stomach or intestines eg, bethanechol, cisapride, domperidone & laxatives.
