Ambroxol HCl
Indications/Uses
SR cap: Acute resp tract diseases w/ impaired formation of secretions, particularly in acute exacerbations of chronic & asthmatic bronchitis, bronchial asthma & bronchiectasis. Resp disorders associated w/ viscid mucus eg, pneumonia, otitis media, sinusitis, nasopharyngitis. Secretolytic therapy for relieving cough in acute & chronic disorders of the resp tract associated w/ pathologically thickened mucus & impaired mucus transport. Syr: Resp disorders associated w/ viscid or excessive mucus.
Dosage/Direction for Use
SR cap 1 cap daily. Syr Adult & childn >12 yr 10 mL bid. Childn 7-12 yr 5 mL bid, 2-6 yr 2.5 mL tid, 1-2 yr 2.5 mL bid.
Administration
Should be taken with food. SR cap: Swallow whole w/o chewing after meal w/ adequate fluid.
Special Precautions
SR cap: Rare reports of severe skin lesions eg, SJS & Lyell's syndrome. Discontinue use if new skin or mucosal lesions occur. Should not be taken by pregnant or breastfeeding patients. Syr: Caution in patients w/ history of peptic ulceration. Caution during pregnancy; use in 1st trimester is not recommended. Should not be taken during lactation.
Adverse Reactions
Mild stomach disturbance eg, pyrosis, dyspepsia, diarrhea, nausea, & vomiting. SR cap: Rash/urticaria, angioedema, anaphylactic & other allergic reactions. Syr: Occasionally, headache, polyuria, & fatigue.
Drug Interactions
SR cap: Administration w/ antibiotics (eg, amoxicillin, cefuroxime, erythromycin) leads to higher antibiotic conc in bronchopulmonary secretions & in sputum.
