Medroxyprogesterone acetate
Indications/Uses
Menorrhagia & secondary amenorrhoea & mild to moderate endometriosis, palliative treatment of hormone-dependent malignant neoplasms.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Usual dose: 5 mg/10 mg once daily. Secondary amenorrhoea treated for 5-10 days. Uterine bleeding treated for 5-10 days beginning on day 16 or 21 of the menstrual cycle. Endometrial hyperplasia treated for 12-14 consecutive days beginning on day 1 or 16 of menstrual cycle.
Administration
May be taken with or without food.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity.  Not to used in decreased liver function/disease; angina or heart attack; breast or reproductive organs cancer; unknown abnormal vag bleeding; porphyrias. Pregnancy.
Special Precautions
Use w/ caution in decreased kidney function; epilepsy; asthma; women who suffer from migraines; high BP; women w/ history or risk of thromboembolism; diabetes; women w/ history of depression. Not recommended during pregnancy & lactation.
Adverse Reactions
Breast tenderness & leakage of liqd from the nipple; hives, acne, hair growth & hair loss; break-through bleeding, vag spotting of blood, changes in menstrual flow, increased/decreased wt, nausea, fever, insomnia, & jaundice; difficulty controlling blood glucose in diabetic patients. Increased risk of heart attacks, stroke, breast cancer, blood clots, & pulmonary emboli in postmenopausal women.
Drug Interactions
Increased elimination & decreased conc in blood w/ aminoglutethimide.
