Retinol palmitate (vit A) 5,000 IU, dl-α-tocopheryl acetate (vit E) 100 IU, ascorbic acid (vit C) 500 mg, Zn sulfate 25 mg
Indications/Uses
Nutritional supplement for adult ≥19 yr for the prevention & treatment of vit &/or mineral deficiencies.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Administration
May be taken with or without food: May be taken w/ meals for better absorption or if GI discomfort occurs.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity. Hypervitaminosis A. Pregnancy & lactation.
Special Precautions
Vit A: Should not be used for treating vit A deficiency in persons w/ malabsorption syndromes; risk of liver damage w/ chronic use. Vit C: Risk of oxalate stones in patients w/ renal failure, hemolytic anemia in erythrocyte G6PD deficiency, precipitating a crisis in sickle cell anemia; hemochromatosis, thalassemia or sideroblastic anemia. Vit E: Caution in taking high doses in patients on warfarin & vit K deficiencies (eg, liver failure). Caution in those w/ any lesions that have a bleeding tendency (eg, bleeding peptic ulcers), history of hemorrhagic stroke & inherited bleeding disorders (eg, hemophilia). Zn: Kidney disease.
Adverse Reactions
Dizziness, headache, diarrhea, abdominal pain/discomfort/cramps, GI discomfort/irritation, nausea/vomiting. Vit A: Dermatitis, photosensitivity reactions. Vit C: Hemolysis after large doses in patients w/ G6PD deficiency; delayed-type allergic response; insomnia, sleepiness; flushing; flatulent distention, heartburn, transient colic; mild increased urination, kidney stone formation (in large doses); erosion of dental enamel. Vit E: Thyroid problems; blurred vision; HTN, thrombophlebitis; rash; myopathy; breast soreness/gynecomastia, gonadal dysfunction; creatinuria, increased serum creatine kinase, serum cholesterol & triglyceride, increased urinary estrogens & androgens. Zn: Loss of appetite; drowsiness; metallic taste; dyspepsia; gastritis.
Drug Interactions
Vit A: Increased risk of bleeding w/ anticoagulants. Potential additive undesirable effects w/ retinoid (eg, etretinate, isotretinoin, tretinoin). Increased risk of pseudomotor cerebri w/ minocycline. Increased serum levels w/ statins. Vit C: Increased risk of Al toxicity w/ antacids, especially in patients w/ renal insufficiency. May decrease excretion of aspirin. May interfere w/ the alcohol-disulfiram reaction. Decreased fluphenazine plasma level. May accelerate excretion of mexiletine. Increases apparent t½ of paracetamol. Reduced blood levels w/ OCs containing estrogens. Decreased anticoagulant effect of warfarin. May result in altered excretion of other drugs. Interferes w/ results of lab tests eg, paracetamol, AST, bilirubin, carbamazepine, creatinine, glucose, LDH, stool guaiac, theophylline, & uric acid. Vit E: May have anti-vit K effects; hemorrhage w/ concomitant intake of anticoagulants. May potentiate the effects of antiplatelets & herbs eg, garlic & ginkgo. Zn: Decreases absorption of cephalosporins, quinolones & tetracyclines, bisphosphonates. Risk of additive effects of cholesterol medicines. Inhibits absorption of Cu & Fe.
