Cetirizine (Ceti-Med) is indicated for symptomatic relief of hypersensitivity reactions such as rhinitis and chronic urticaria. It is also indicated for the treatment of allergic conjunctivitis.
Ceti-Med Tablet: Adults & Children >12 years: one tablet a day;
Children 6-12 years: 5 mg (1/2 tablet) twice a day or 10 mg once a day;
2-5 years: 5 mg once daily (preferably given as 2.5 mg twice a day).
Ceti-Med Suspension (Oral Drops): Children >12 years: 1 mL once daily;
Children 6-12 years: 1 mL once daily or as divided doses, 0.5 mL twice daily;
2-5 years: 0.5 mL once daily.
Ceti-Med Oral Solution: Children >12 years: 10 mL (2 teaspoonfuls daily);
Children 6-12 year: 10 mL (2 teaspoonfuls daily) either as a single dose or as divided doses (1 teaspoonful in the morning and 1 teaspoonful in the evening);
2-5 years: 5 mL (1 teaspoonful) daily preferably given as 2.5 mL (1/2 teaspoon) twice daily.
Premature infants or neonates. Elderly.
The most common adverse effect of cetirizine is sedation. Other adverse effects include hypotension, tinnitus, headache, dizziness, paresthesias, gastrointestinal disturbances and blood disorders.
Cetirizine (Ceti-Med) may enhance the sedative effects of CNS depressants including alcohol, barbiturates, hypnotics, opioid analgesics, anxiolytic sedatives and neuroleptic. MAOIs may enhance the antimuscarinic effects of antihistamines, and antihistamines have an additive antimuscarinic action with antimuscarinic drug such as atropine and tricyclic antidepressant.
