Levofloxacin

Indications/Uses

UTI, chronic bacterial prostatitis, complicated skin & soft-tissue infections, hospital-acquired pneumonia, acute sinusitis & acute pyelonephritis.

Dosage/Direction for Use

Uncomplicated UTI 250 mg once daily for 3 days. Other susceptible infections 250 or 500 mg once or bid for 10-14 days. Chronic bacterial prostatitis 500 mg daily for 28 days. Complicated skin infections & hospital-acquired pneumonia Alternatively, 750 mg once daily for 7-14 days.

Administration

May be taken with or without food: Take at least 2 hr before or after Fe salts, antacids & sucralfate. Ensure adequate fluid intake.

Contraindications

Hypersensitivity to levofloxacin or other quinolones. Epilepsy; history of tendon disorder related to fluoroquinolones. Pregnancy & lactation.

Adverse Reactions

Confusion, difficulty breathing, irregular heartbeat, palpitations or chest pain, joint muscle or tendon pain, nightmares, changes in thought process, redness blistering, peeling or loosening of the skin, including inside the mouth, seizure, severe or watery diarrhea, skin rash, itching, swelling of the face or neck, tremor or restlessness, vision changes, vomiting.
