Indications/Uses
Non-acidic Vitamin C for the treatment and prevention of Vitamin C deficiency. Strengthens immune system. Antioxidant. Stimulates collagen synthesis. Helps in wound healing and regeneration process.
Dosage/Direction for Use
One tablet daily or as prescribed by the physician.
Oral route.
Missed dose: Take the next dose if the patient missed a dose.
Overdosage
Ascorbic acid in excess of body's needs is also rapidly eliminated unchanged in the urine; this generally occurs when exceeding 100 mg daily. It is removed by hemodialysis.
Prolonged or excessive use of Vitamin C preparations may cause erosion of tooth enamel. Large doses of ascorbic acid have resulted in hemolysis in patients with G6PD Deficiency.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity to Vitamin C or to any component of the preparation.
Special Precautions
Consult a doctor: If the patient have taken more than recommended dosage.
Use In Pregnancy & Lactation
Ascorbic acid in doses greater than 1 g daily should not be taken during pregnancy since the effect of large doses on the fetus was unknown. Ascorbic acid crosses the placenta and is distributed into breast milk.
Adverse Reactions
Ascorbic acid is usually well tolerated. Large doses may cause diarrhea and the formation of renal calcium oxalate calculi. Doses of 600 mg or more daily have a diuretic action. Ascorbic acid should be given with care to patients with hyperoxaluria. Tolerance may be induced in patients taking high doses.
Drug Interactions
Aluminum carbonate, aluminum hydroxide, aluminum phosphate, amygdalin, cyanocobalamin, deferoxamine, dihydroxyaluminum aminoacetate, dihydroxyaluminum sodium carbonate, indinavir, magaldrate.
Ascorbic acid may increase absorption of iron in iron deficiency states.
Omeprazole may affect the bioavailability of dietary vitamin C.
Ascorbic Acid is given in addition to Deferoxamine to patients with iron overload to achieve better excretion. However, early on in treatment when there is excess tissue iron there is some evidence that ascorbic acid may worsen iron toxicity, particularly to the heart. Thus, ascorbic acid should not be given for the first month after starting Deferoxamine treatment.
Laboratory Interactions: Ascorbic acid could cause chemical interference in laboratory tests for blood or urine creatinine, glucose and uric acid.
Storage
Store at temperatures not exceeding 30°C.
Keep away from heat and direct sunlight. Exposure to these conditions may lead to slight discoloration.
