Cefaclor monohydrate

Indications/Uses

Lower resp tract infections, including pneumonia, acute bronchitis, acute exacerbations of chronic bronchitis, upper resp tract infections, including pharyngitis & tonsilitis, UTI, including pyelonephritis & cystitis, skin & soft tissue infections, otitis media, sinusitis & gonococcal urethritis.

Dosage/Direction for Use

Adult & adolescent 250-500 mg 8 hrly up to 4 g daily. Childn >5 yr 250 mg tid, 1-5 yr 125 mg tid, >1 mth 20 mg/kg daily in 3 divided doses. Max: 40 mg/kg, but not exceeding 1 g. Bronchitis & pneumonia 250 mg tid. Sinusitis 250 mg tid for 10 days. Acute gonococcal urethritis in male & female 3 g as a single dose in combination w/ 1 g probenecid. Serious infections, otitis media & infections caused by less susceptible organisms 40 mg/kg/day in divided doses. Max: 1 g/day.

Special Precautions

Prolonged used may result in overgrowth of nonsusceptible organisms. Pseudomembranous colitis. Penicillin-sensitive patients; history of allergy. Monitor renal & hematological status during prolonged & high-dose therapy. Contains tartrazine which may cause allergic reactions in susceptible persons.

Adverse Reactions

Skin rashes, urticaria, eosinophilia, fever, serum sickness-like anaphylactic reactions, acute interstitial nephritis.
