Indications/Uses
Betadine Gargle Fast & soothing relief of sore throat & mouth sores, breath freshener where excessive bacteria in mouth is present, mouth wash for oral hygiene & post-op or bedridden patients, oral antiseptic before & after dental operations or tooth extractions, degerming soak for dentures & toothbrushes. Betadine Paint Mouth sores (aphthous ulcers), herpes simplex, herpes zoster (shingles), herpes labialis (cold sores), grazes, abrasions, cuts & wounds, or any break in the skin which requires protection from infection. Dermal infections caused by bacteria, viruses & fungi. Betadine Throat Spray Acute mucosal infections of the mouth & pharynx including stomatitis, gingivitis, aphthous ulcers, pharyngitis, tonsillitis, monilial infections, common colds & flu. Oral hygiene prior to, during & after dental & oral surgery. Relief of sore throat.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Betadine Gargle Sore throat & mouth infections Gargle undiluted 15 mL followed by mouth rinsing for min of 30 sec. Repeat 2-4 times daily or as required. Betadine Paint Apply undiluted to affected area bid. Betadine Throat Spray Spray to the mucous membrane of the throat several times a day (3-4 hrly).
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity. Hyperthyroidism or any thyroid diseases. Patients on lithium therapy. Before & after a specific medical treatment involving use of radioactive iodine. Betadine Throat Spray Do not use 4 wk prior to radioiodine scintigraphy or radioiodine treatment of thyroid carcinoma. Patients w/ goiter & thyroid nodules. Childn <6 yr.
Special Precautions
Do not apply other medications to the same area treated. Avoid pooling beneath the patient in pre-op prep. Do not heat prior to use. Avoid contact w/ eyes & soln containing detergent in treating open wounds. Prolonged use. Patients w/ goiter, thyroid nodules & other non-acute thyroid diseases. Monitor thyroid function. Not to be used prior to or after radioiodine scintigraphy or radioiodine treatment of thyroid carcinoma. Renal impairment. False +ve lab results w/ toluidine or gum guaiac for Hb or glucose determination in stool or urine. May interfere w/ thyroid function tests. Pregnancy & lactation. Newborns & small infants. Betadine Throat Spray Avoid aspiration into the resp tract especially in intubated patients.
Adverse Reactions
Rarely, hypersensitive/allergic skin reaction (itchiness, redness, small blisters).
Drug Interactions
May alter the effect w/ other externally applied wound healing drugs/prep. Products containing enzymatic component, alkali, Hg, silver, hydrogen peroxide, tannic acid & taurolidine. Transient dark discolorations in areas involved in concomitant use or immediately after application of octenidine-containing antiseptics.
