Contraindications

Hypersensitivity to aspirin & other salicylates. History of asthma, acute GI ulcer. Severe renal & cardiac failure.

Special Precautions

Patients prone to dyspepsia or known to have lesion of gastric mucosa; w/ hemophilia or other hemorrhagic disorders, gout, aspirin intolerance (especially aspirin-sensitive asthmatics). Renal or hepatic impairment. Pregnancy. Not to be taken during lactation. Discontinue breastfeeding if used regularly or when taking high doses. Childn <12 yr.

Adverse Reactions

GI disturbances eg, nausea, dyspepsia & vomiting. Urticaria & other skin eruptions, angioedema, rhinitis & severe/fatal paroxysmal bronchospasm & dyspnea. Increased bleeding time, decreased platelet adhesiveness & hypoprothrombinemia (large doses). May exhibit cross-sensitivity to other NSAIDs. Symptoms of salicylism eg, dizziness, tinnitus, deafness, sweating, nausea & vomiting, headache & mental confusion; Reye's syndrome (childn).

Drug Interactions

Enhanced effects on GIT w/ alcohol. May enhance activity of coumarin anticoagulants, sulphonylurea, hypoglycemic agents, MTX, phenytoin & valproic acid. Diminished effects of uricosurics eg, probenecid & sulphinpyrazone.
