Indications/Uses
For deficiency & increased requirement of vit C, B & Zn.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Adult & adolescent 1 effervescent tab daily. Dissolve effervescent tab in a glass of water (200 mL).
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity; severe renal insufficiency (GFR <30 mL/min) including individuals on dialysis; nephrolithiasis or history of nephrolithiasis; hyperoxaluria; hypercalcemia; severe hypercalciuria.
Special Precautions
Not for treatment of vit B12 deficiency due to atrophic gastritis, disorder of the ileum or pancreas & GI malabsorption of vit B12 or intrinsic factor deficiency. Increased risk of adverse effects w/ acute & chronic overdose. Intake should be separated from other medications by 4 hr. Consider Na content in patients on controlled Na diet. May interfere w/ lab test resulting in false reading. Caution in patients w/ hemochromatosis or G6PD deficiency. Not recommended in childn <12 yr.
Adverse Reactions
Diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, GI & abdominal pains, constipation; allergic reaction, anaphylactic reaction/shock, hypersensitivity reactions; headache, dizziness, insomnia, nervousness; chromaturia.
Drug Interactions
Vit C: Enhanced tissue Fe toxicity w/ desferrioxamine. Reduced cyclosporine blood level. May interfere w/ effectiveness of disulfiram or warfarin. May enhance Fe absorption. May cause chemical interference in lab tests that involve oxidation-reduction reactions eg, analyses of glucose, creatinine, carbamazepine, uric acid, & inorganic phosphates in urine, serum & of occult blood in feces. May interfere w/ tests that measure urinary & blood glucose resulting in false readings. Vit B6: Enhanced metabolism of levodopa. Vit B12: Chloramphenicol may delay or interrupt reticulocyte response to vit B12. Folic acid: May reduce effectiveness of MTX. Ca: Reduced urinary excretion w/ thiazide diuretics. Mg & Zn: Increased Mg &/or Zn levels w/ K-sparing diuretics. Polyvalent cations (Ca, Mg, Zn): May form complexes w/ certain substances (eg, tetracycline/quinolone antibiotic, penicillamine, bisphosphonates, levothyroxine, methyldopa, mycophenolate mofetil, eltrombopag) resulting in decreased absorption of both substances. Oxalic acid (found in spinach & rhubarb) & phytic acid (whole cereals) may inhibit Ca, Mg & Zn absorption. Vit B1 & B6: May cause false +ve result in spot test w/ Ehrlich's reagent.
