Diphenhydramine HCl
Indications/Uses
Temporary relief of hay fever & other upper resp allergy symptoms of runny nose, sneezing, itching of the nose or throat, & itchy, watery eyes; common cold symptoms of runny nose & sneezing; cough. Allergic dermatoses eg, urticaria, food allergy, pruritus. Prevention & treatment of nausea, vomiting, or dizziness associated w/ motion sickness. Helps to reduce difficulty falling asleep (adult & childn ≥12 yr).
Dosage/Direction for Use
Adult & childn ≥12 yr Antitussive 168 mg daily in divided doses of up to 28 mg every 4 hr. Antihistaminic/antiemetic 300 mg daily in divided doses no >25-50 mg every 4-6 hr. Nighttime sleep aid 50 mg at bedtime. Childn 6 to <12 yr Antitussive 84 mg daily in divided doses of up to 14 mg every 4 hr. Antihistaminic/antiemetic 150 mg daily in divided doses no >12.5-25 mg every 4-6 hr, 4 to <6 yr Antitussive 42 mg daily in divided doses of up to 7 mg every 4 hr, 2 to <6 yr Antihistaminic 37.5 mg daily in divided doses no <6.25 mg every 4-6 hr.
Administration
May be taken with or without food.
Special Precautions
Not to be used for persistent or chronic cough eg, those occurring w/ asthma, or where cough is accompanied by excessive secretions. Patients w/ resp condition eg, emphysema (adult), chronic bronchitis, or acute or chronic bronchial asthma; glaucoma, prostate hyperplasia w/ urinary retention. Do not use w/ any other product containing diphenhydramine. May cause drowsiness. Caution when driving a motor vehicle or operating machinery. Do not drive a motor vehicle or operate machinery when used to reduce difficulty in falling asleep. Not to be used during pregnancy or lactation. Not recommended as antitussive in childn <4 yr. Do not use as antihistaminic in childn <2 yr.
Adverse Reactions
Confusional state, irritability, nervousness, hallucination, sedation, agitation, insomnia, abnormal coordination, convulsion, headache, paraesthesia, tremor, blurred vision, tinnitus, palpitations, tachycardia, dry throat, hypotension, chest discomfort, nasal dryness, constipation, diarrhoea, dyspepsia, nausea, vomiting, rash, pruritus, urticaria, urinary retention.
Drug Interactions
May enhance sedative effects of CNS depressants including alcohol, sedatives & tranquilizers.
