Contents
Per 750 mg powd for inj Ampicillin Na 500 mg, sulbactam Na 250 mg. Per 1.5 g powd for inj Ampicillin Na 1 g, sulbactam Na 500 mg
Indications/Uses
For infections where β-lactamase producing organism might occur, including uncomplicated gonorrhea, otitis media, resp tract & UTI.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Slow IV inj over at least 10-15 min or IV infusion over 15-30 min or deep IM inj. Recommended daily dose: 1 vial every 6-8 hr. Max: Sulbactam 4 g/day. Renal impairment CrCl ≥30 mL/min/1.73 m2 1.5-3 g every 6-8 hr, 15-29 mL/min/1.73 m2 1.5-3 g every 12 hr, 5-14 mL/min/1.73 m2 1.5-3 g every 12 hr.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity to any of the penicillins.
Special Precautions
History of penicillin hypersensitivity &/or hypersensitivity reactions to multiple allergens. Not to be administered in patients w/ infectious mononucleosis. Discontinue if superinfections w/ mycotic or bacterial pathogens occur. Pregnancy & lactation.
Adverse Reactions
Diarrhea, rash; itching, nausea, vomiting, candidiasis, fatigue, malaise, headache, chest pain, flatulence, abdominal distension, glossitis, urine retention, dysuria, edema, facial swelling, erythema, chills, throat tightness, substernal pain, epistaxis & mucosal bleeding. Ampicillin: Gastritis, stomach pain, black hairy tongue, enterocolitis, & pseudomembranous colitis; elevated liver enzyme levels. Urticaria, erythema multiforme, & exfoliative dermatitis. Fall in Hb levels & hematocrit, & increased leukocyte count.
Drug Interactions
Decreased renal tubular secretion & increased/prolonged blood levels w/ probenecid. Ampicillin: Increased incidence of rashes w/ allopurinol. In vitro inactivation of aminoglycosides. False +ve reactions of glucose in urine using Clinitest, Benedict's soln or Fehling's soln. Transient decrease in plasma conc of total conjugated estriol, estrioglucuronide, conjugated estrone & estradiol when administered in pregnant women.
