Concise Prescribing Info
Contents
Levosalbutamol tartrate
Indications/Uses
Treatment or prevention of bronchospasm in adults w/ reversible obstructive airway disease.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Adult 2 inhalations (levosalbutamol free base 90 mcg) repeated every 4-6 hr; in some patients, 1 inhalation (levosalbutamol free base 45 mcg) every 4 hr may be sufficient.
Contraindications
History of hypersensitivity to levosalbutamol or racemic salbutamol (reactions including urticaria, angioedema, rash, bronchospasm, anaphylaxis & oropharyngeal edema).
Special Precautions
For oral inhalation only. Avoid spraying in the eyes. Discontinue immediately if paradoxical bronchospasm or significant CV effects occur. Deterioration of asthma. Use of β-adrenergic agonist alone may not be adequate to control asthma, give early consideration to adding anti-inflammatory agents eg, corticosteroids, to therapeutic regimen. May produce ECG changes eg, flattening of T-wave, prolongation of QTc interval, & ST segment depression. Do not exceed recommended dose. Immediate hypersensitivity reactions. Patients w/ CV disorders, especially coronary insufficiency, HTN, & cardiac arrhythmias; convulsive disorders, hyperthyroidism, or DM; & who are unusually responsive to sympathomimetic amines. Clinically significant changes in systolic & diastolic BP after use of any β-adrenergic bronchodilator. Large doses of IV racemic salbutamol may aggravate preexisting DM & ketoacidosis. Hypokalemia. May affect ability to drive & use machines. Renal impairment. Pregnancy & lactation. Elderly.
Adverse Reactions
Paradoxical bronchospasm, CV effects, immediate hypersensitivity reactions, hypokalemia. Cough; tremor.
Drug Interactions
Do not use concomitantly w/ other short-acting sympathomimetic aerosol bronchodilators or epinephrine. Block pulmonary effect & produce severe bronchospasm in asthmatic patients w/ β-blockers. Acutely worsened ECG changes or hypokalemia w/ non-K sparing diuretics (eg, loop & thiazide diuretics). Mean decreases in serum digoxin levels after single-dose IV & PO of racemic salbutamol. Action of salbutamol on vascular system may be potentiated w/ MAOIs or TCAs, or w/in 2 wk of discontinuation of such agents.
