Montelukast
Indications/Uses
Management of chronic asthma, allergic rhinitis, & prophylaxis for exercise-induced asthma.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Adult ≥15 yr 10 mg once daily at bed time.
Administration
May be taken with or without food.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity. Patients w/ hepatic impairment or cirrhosis.
Special Precautions
Not indicated in acute asthma attacks. Should not be used as monotherapy for treatment & management of exercise-induced bronchospasm. Pregnancy & lactation. Safety & effectiveness in childn <2 yr have not been established.
Adverse Reactions
GI disturbances, dry mouth, thirst, hypersensitivity reactions (including anaphylaxis, angioedema & skin reactions), asthenia, dizziness, irritability, restlessness, headache, sleep disorders (insomnia, drowsiness, nightmares); URTI, fever, arthralgia, myalgia.
Drug Interactions
Employ appropriate clinical monitoring when co-administered w/ potent CYP450 inducers eg, phenobarb or rifampin.
