Acetylcysteine
Indications/Uses
Secretolytic therapy in acute & chronic bronchopulmonary diseases accompanied by impaired formation & transport of mucus.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Adult & adolescent from 14 yr ½ tab bid or 1 tab once daily (equiv to 600 mg daily). Duration of use: Not >4-5 days w/o medical advice.
Administration
Should be taken with food: Dissolve tab in a glass of water.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity. Active peptic ulceration. Childn <2 yr. 600 mg: Not to be used in childn <14 yr.
Special Precautions
Closely monitor patients w/ bronchial asthma during therapy. Patients w/ history of ulcers. Perform appropriate measures (eg, drainage & aspiration) if unable to expectorate. Terminate use if cutaneous & mucosal changes newly occur. Avoid treatment for longer periods in patients w/ histamine intolerance. Pregnancy & lactation.
Adverse Reactions
Hypersensitivity reactions; headache; tinnitus; tachycardia; nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, abdominal pain, stomatitis; urticaria, rash, angioedema, itching, exanthema; fever; hypotension.
Drug Interactions
May cause dangerous secretory congestion due to reduced cough reflex w/ antitussives. Do not mix w/ antibiotics & administer at an interval of at least 2 hr. May potentiate vasodilatory effects of nitroglycerin. Reduced effectiveness w/ activated carbon in high doses. May affect colorimetric determination of salicylates & determination results of ketone bodies.
