Evaluation for Respone

Check adult victim’s responsiveness

  • Rescuer should ensure that the scene is safe & immediately check for response
  • Quickly assess for responsiveness by gently tapping the victim on the shoulders & asking loudly “are you alright?”
  • Assume cardiac arrest if there is unresponsiveness, abnormal breathing (ie gasping) or absence of breathing
    • Brief, generalized seizures may be the initial presentation of cardiac arrest
  • Assessment should take no longer than 10 sec
