Aluminum hydroxide, magnesium hydroxide, simethicone.
Each 10 ml contains aluminium hydroxide 800 mg, magnesium hydroxide 800 mg and simethicone 60 mg.
Pharmacology: Zellox-II is a high potency liquid antacid with an antiflatulent. Aluminium hydroxide and magnesium hydroxide are basic compounds that neutralize acid in the gastric contents. The combination of aluminium hydroxide and magnesium hydroxide provides both a fast-acting component which can achieve neutralization in a few minutes, and a more sustained effect.
Simethicone is a water-repellent and has a low surface tension. It is effective for the relief of concomitant distress caused by mucus-surrounded gas pockets and swallowed air.
Pharmacokinetics: Aluminium hydroxide slowly reacts with gastric acids to form soluble aluminum chloride some of which is absorbed and eliminated in the urine. The aluminium compounds remaining in the gastrointestinal tract, form insoluble, poorly absorbed aluminium salts in the intestine including hydroxides, carbonates, phosphates and fatty acid derivatives, which are excreted in the feces.
Magnesium hydroxide is converted to its chloride salts by gastric acids. Some of the magnesium ions are absorbed from the small intestines and the unabsorbed portions are excreted in the feces.
Zellox-II is indicated for relief from gastric acidity, indigestion, heartburn, flatulence and dyspepsia.
For oral use only.
5 to 10ml as required or one hour after food and at bedtime or as directed by a physician.
Symptoms and Treatment for Overdose and Antidote: Symptoms of hypercalcaemia or hypermagnesaemia include anorexia, nausea, vomiting, constipation, diarrhea, abdominal pain, muscle weakness, nervousness and restlessness. Reducing dosage or discontinuing the treatment will cause these symptoms to dissipate. If symptoms persist consult a medical professional.
Zellox-II is contraindicated in patients with renal insufficiency due to accumulation of the small amount of absorbed magnesium ion, which may lead to central nervous system depression and other symptoms of hypermagnesaemia.
Aluminium hydroxide may react with phosphate to form insoluble aluminium phosphate possibly causing phosphorous deficiencies in patients whose diet is low in phosphorus. This can be overcome by regular intake of milk or phosphorous supplements.
Elevated serum magnesium ion concentration may cause central nervous system depression.
Shake well before use.
Refrigerate after opening.
Discard unused portion after 10 days.
Inadequate and no well-controlled studies in pregnancy and lactation have been done.
The side effects that may be encountered with such preparations are changes in bowel function, diarrhea being the common symptom. A small reduction in dosage may often alleviate these symptoms.
Antacid preparations containing aluminium and magnesium ions form complexes with tetracyclines markedly reducing the blood levels of the antibiotic. Therefore doses of Zellox-II and tetracyclines should be given one to two hours apart. Concomitant use of antacid preparations may alter the absorption profiles of a wide variety of drugs.
Keep container well closed. Protect from strong light. Store below 30°C.
Recommended Shelf-Life: 3 years.
