Indications/Uses

In addition to oral rehydration for acute diarrhoea in adults & childn >2 yr. Symptomatic treatment of chronic functional diarrhoea & pain associated w/ functional bowel diseases in adults.

Dosage/Direction for Use

Acute diarrhoea Adult Ave: 3 sachets daily for 7 days. May double dose at start of treatment. Childn from 2 yr 4 sachets daily for 3 days then 2 sachets daily for 4 days. Other indications Adult Ave: 3 sachets daily.

Overdosage

View Smecta overdosage for action to be taken in the event of an overdose.

Administration

May be taken with or without food: Powd for oral susp: In adults, dissolve contents in 50 mL of water. For childn, dissolve contents in feeding bottle w/ 50 mL water or mix w/ semi-liqd food (eg, broth, compote, puree, baby food). SmectaGo: Swallow contents directly. Massage sachet before opening & use only once after opening.

Special Precautions

Discontinue use if constipation occurs. History of severe chronic constipation. Symptoms not improving or worsening w/in 3 days of treatment in acute diarrhoea; digestive pain w/ fever & vomiting. Ensure plenty of salty or sweet fluids to avoid dehydration. Avoid raw vegetables & fruit, green vegetables, spicy dishes, frozen foods/drinks. Not recommended for prolonged or repeated use in adults. Avoid chronic use in childn >2 yr. Not recommended in patients w/ fructose intolerance, glucose or galactose malabsorption syndrome or sucrase/isomaltase deficiency. Not recommended during pregnancy & lactation. Avoid use in infants & childn <2 yr.
