Selexipag is used on its own or together with other medicines to treat pulmonary arterial hypertension (high blood pressure in the blood vessels leading to the lungs).
Take Selexipag exactly as directed by your doctor or according to the instructions on the label. Do not take more or less than instructed by your doctor.
You may take this medicine with or without food. To help you better tolerate the side effects, you may take it consistently with food. Try to take it at the same time each day.
Swallow the tablet whole with a glass of water. Do not divide, chew, or crush the tablet.
The dose of this medicine will be decided by your doctor. Your doctor will advise you on the treatment timeframe depending on your response to the medication.
Selexipag must be taken regularly for it to be effective. Continue taking this medicine even when you feel better. Do not stop taking it unless instructed by the doctor.
Take the missed dose as soon as you remember. If your next dose is due within 6 hours, skip the missed dose and return to your normal dosing schedule.
If you missed your doses for 3 or more days, inform your doctor immediately. Your doctor may require you to restart the treatment.
DO NOT double a dose under any circumstances.
If you often forget to take your medicine, let your doctor and pharmacist know.
Alert your doctor if you have the following conditions:
- history of stroke in the last 3 months
- history of heart attack in the last 6 months
- weakness and inability of the heart to pump blood
- severe arrhythmia (irregular or abnormal heartbeat)
- severe narrowing of the blood vessels of the heart
- unstable angina (chest pain that occurs randomly or unexpectedly)
- inherited or acquired problem in the heart valves
as Selexipag may not be suitable for you.
Do not take this medicine with gemfibrozil (cholesterol-lowering medicine).
Inform your doctor if you have the following conditions:
- moderate to severe liver disease
- severe kidney disease
Let your doctor know if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
Be sure to check with your doctor or pharmacist before giving Selexipag to the elderly. Elderly people may be more sensitive to the side effects.
Why is it important to keep my appointments with the doctor?
Keep your appointments with your doctor. Your doctor needs to monitor your condition and check your response to the medication regularly.
- Routine tests (e.g. liver and thyroid function) may be done while you are being treated with Selexipag. Your doctor will advise you about how often you need to have these tests.
- Regular monitoring for signs of lung problems or distress may also be needed.
Selexipag may cause any of the following side effects: headache, nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, indigestion, stuffy nose, flushing, decreased appetite, weight loss, skin rash, itching, jaw pain, joint or muscle pain, and pain in the extremities.
Some side effects may need immediate medical help. Alert your doctor quickly if you experience any of the following:
- new or worsening difficulty breathing, cough or wheezing
- severe headache, vomiting, diarrhoea, and muscle or joint pain that you cannot tolerate
Inform your doctor if any of these side effects do not go away or are severe, or if you experience other side effects.
Do not take Selexipag with gemfibrozil (cholesterol-lowering medicine).
Inform your doctor and pharmacist if you are taking any of these medicines:
- clopidogrel (blood-thinning medicine)
- deferasirox (medicine to treat high levels of iron in the body)
- rifampicin (medicine to treat TB, a lung infection known as tuberculosis)
- teriflunomide (medicine for a disease affecting the brain and/or spinal cord)
This list does not include all medicines that may interact with Selexipag.
Always notify your doctor and pharmacist if you are taking any other medicines, including herbal tonics such as traditional Chinese medicines, supplements, and medicines that you buy without a prescription.
Avoid alcohol.
Store in a cool, dry place away from the reach of children.
Medicines must not be used past the expiry date.
