Na picosulfate 10 mg, Mg oxide 3.5 g, anhydrous citric acid 12 g
Indications/Uses
Clean the bowel prior to X-ray examination or endoscopy & surgery when judged clinically necessary.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Adult Take the 1st dose during the evening pre-op & the 2nd dose, the next day during the morning pre-op, or the 1st dose during the afternoon or early evening pre-op & the 2nd dose, 6 hr later during the evening pre-op. Childn Take the 1st dose 8 am pre-op & the 2nd dose 6-8 hr later. ≥9 yr Adult dose, 4-9 yr 1 sachet in the morning & ½ sachet in the afternoon, 2-4 yr ½ sachet in the morning & in the afternoon, 1-2 yr ¼ sachet in the morning & in the afternoon.
Administration
May be taken with or without food: Dissolve in 150 mL cold water & stir for 2-3 min.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity. Congestive cardiac failure, gastric retention, GI ulceration, toxic colitis & megacolon, ileus, severe nausea & vomiting, acute appendicitis, known or suspected GI obstruction or perforation, severe dehydration, rhabdomyolysis, hypermagnesemia, active inflammatory bowel disease. Mg accumulation in plasma may occur in patients w/ severely reduced renal function.
Special Precautions
Elective, open colorectal surgery, recent GI surgery, heart disease, inflammatory bowel disease. Patients on water &/or electrolyte balance-affecting drugs eg, diuretics, corticosteroids, lithium; patients on antiepileptics w/ previously controlled epilepsy. Low body wt, fluid & electrolyte imbalance in patients w/ signs or symptoms of hypokalaemia or hyponatremia. Avoid drinking water only to replace fluid loss. Bowel cleansing should not exceed 24 hr. Patients under controlled K diet. Not to be taken by patients w/ galactose intolerance, Lapp lactase deficiency or glucose-galactose malabsorption. Not to be used as a routine laxative. Renal impairment. Not to be used during pregnancy. Lactation. Childn. Elderly & debilitated patients.
Adverse Reactions
Hypermagnesaemia; headache; vomiting, nausea, abdominal pain.
Drug Interactions
May decrease absorption of other orally administered drugs. Take tetracycline & fluoroquinolone antibiotics, Fe, digoxin, chlorpromazine & penicillamine at least 2 hr before & not <6 hr after administration to avoid chelation w/ Mg. Lowered efficacy by bulk-forming laxatives. Increased risk of water retention &/or electrolyte imbalance w/ NSAIDs or drugs inducing SIADH eg, TCAs, SSRIs, antipsychotic drugs & carbamazepine.
