Fe (III) hydroxide polymaltose complex

Indications/Uses

Fe deficiency w/ & w/o anaemia. Prophylaxis of Fe deficiency during pregnancy.

Dosage/Direction for Use

Adult & childn >12 yr Fe deficiency anaemia 1-3 tab daily for 3-5 mth until normalisation of Hb values, continue therapy for several wk w/ 1 tab daily to replenish Fe stores. Fe deficiency w/o anaemia 1 tab once daily for 1-2 mth. Fe deficiency anaemia in pregnancy 2-3 tab daily until normalisation of Hb values, continue therapy w/ 1 tab daily until pregnancy ends to replenish & supplement increased Fe needed during pregnancy.

Overdosage

View Maltofer overdosage for action to be taken in the event of an overdose.

Administration

Should be taken with food: Take during or immediately after meals. May be chewed or swallowed whole.

Contraindications

Hypersensitivity. Fe overload eg, haemochromatosis, haemosiderosis; Fe utilisation disturbances eg, lead & sideroachrestic anaemia, thalassaemia; anaemia not caused by Fe deficiency eg, haemolytic or megaloblastic anaemia due to vit B₁₂ deficiency.

Special Precautions

Reconsider treatment if increased Hb by about 2-3 g/dL after 3 wk has not been achieved. Anaemia due to infections or tumours. Na-restricted patients; contains Na 10 mg/tab. Pregnancy & lactation. Not recommended in childn <12 yr.

Adverse Reactions

Discoloured faeces. GI disorders eg, diarrhoea, nausea, abdominal pain & distention, dyspepsia, epigastric discomfort, constipation.
