Indications/Uses

Hyperkalaemia in adults.

Dosage/Direction for Use

Correction phase: Initially 10 g tds. Continue for additional 24 hr if patient is still hyperkalaemic after 48 hr of treatment. Maintenance phase: Initially 5 g once daily, w/ possible titration up to 10 g once daily or down to 5 g once every other day as needed to maintain normal K level. Max: 10 g once daily. Dialysis patient Initially 5 g once daily on non-dialysis days. Dose may be titrated up or down wkly based on pre-dialysis serum K value after long interdialytic interval, adjust dose at 1-wk interval in increments of 5 g up to 15 g once daily on non-dialysis days.

Overdosage

Administration

May be taken with or without food: Mix w/ 45 mL water & stir well. Drink while still cloudy.

Hypersensitivity.

Special Precautions

Discontinue use in patients w/ severe hypokalaemia. QT prolongation; intestinal perforation. Monitor serum K when clinically indicated & after dose titration. Risk of interaction w/ X-rays. Low Na diet. Avoid use during pregnancy. Childn & adolescents <18 yr.

Hypokalaemia; constipation; oedema-related events.

Drug Interactions

Decreased C_max & AUC of dabigatran; tacrolimus. Raised gastric pH w/ azole antifungals (eg, ketoconazole, itraconazole, posaconazole), anti-HIV agents (eg, atazanavir, nelfinavir, indinavir, ritonavir, saquinavir, raltegravir, ledipasvir, rilpivirine), tyrosine kinase inhibitors (eg, erlotinib, dasatinib, nilotinib). Changes in solubility & absorption kinetics of medicinal products w/ pH-dependent bioavailability.
