The side effects that have been consistently observed are only a temporary increase in the drug's concentration in the urine and serum uric acid levels. This increase in uric acid is due to the breakdown of inosine into uric acid, as occurs in the natural purine metabolism of inosine in the human body.
Side effects that occasionally occur and are temporary include skin rashes or itching, fatigue or malaise, and diarrhea. Rare side effects include temporary headaches, vertigo, nervousness or insomnia, constipation, and polyuria. The frequency of these side effects is not statistically significant based on the overall post-marketing surveillance data.
Clinical studies to date have not shown any drug interactions, and no food interactions are known.
