Cefepime

Indications/Uses

Lower resp tract infections (pneumonia & bronchopneumonia); complicated upper (pyelonephritis) & lower UTI; skin & skin structure infections; intra-abdominal infections (peritonitis & biliary tract infections); severe or complicated gynecological infections; septicaemia; empiric treatment in febrile neutropenia.

Dosage/Direction for Use

Adult 1 g IV/IM 12 hrly. Mild to moderate UTI 500 mg-1 g IV/IM 12 hrly. Mild to moderate infections other than UTI 1 g IV/IM 12 hrly. Severe infections 2 g IV 12 hrly. Very severe or life-threatening infections 2 g IV 8 hrly. Duration: 7-10 days or longer (severe infections).

Contraindications

Hypersensitivity to cephalosporins, penicillins & other β-lactams. Childn <13 yr.

Special Precautions

Avoid long-term use. Diarrhea. Renal impairment (CrCl ≤30 mL/min). Pregnancy & lactation.

Adverse Reactions

Skin reaction, rash, urticaria, pruritus, fever, anaphylaxis; nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, diarrhea, dyspepsia, chest pain & bradycardia; cough, throat pain, dyspnea; headache, dizziness, insomnia, paresthesia, anxiety, confusion; phlebitis & inj site inflammation.

Drug Interactions

Metronidazole, vancomycin, gentamicin, tobramycin sulfate or netilmicin sulfate; aminoglycosides, diuretics.
