Lactulose.
Description
Each 5 mL contains: Lactulose 3.335 g.
Action
Pharmacology: Lactulose as the active substance. In colon, Lactulose is hydrolyzed into organic with low molecular weight.
These organic acids will increase osmotic pressure and acidity so that faeces would softer.
Indications/Uses
For constipation treatment, in patients with chronic constipation.
For "portal-systemic encephalopathy", including hepatic pre-comatose and comatose state.
Dosage/Direction for Use
For chronic constipation: LAXALOSAN restores physiological function of the colon. Thus, this effect may take up to 48 until normal defecation return. It is recommended to take daily dose during breakfast. Dose should be adjusted to each patient needs. Information available regarding use in children is still very limited.

For hepatic pre-comatose and comatose: Initial dose: 3 times a day 30-50 mL.
Maintenance dose: adjusted to patient needs, and diarrhea should be avoided.
Note: Normal defecation commonly restored ± 48 hours after administration.
LAXALOSAN may be mixed with fruit juice, water and milk.
Contraindications
Lactulose is contraindicated in patients with intestinal obstruction, lactulose hypersensitivity and galactosemia patients.
Special Precautions
Lactulose use in pregnant women should be under doctor consideration. Should be used with cautions for diabetics patient. Should be used with caution for galactosemia patients. It is recommended to obtain doctor's advice in use for children.
Adverse Reactions
Bloating, abdominal cramps and discomfort.
Excessive dose may causes diarrhea.
Nausea, vomiting and dry mouth were reported.
If high doses (normally only associated with hepatic encephathy, HE) are used for an extended period of time, the patients may experience and electrolyte imbalances due to diarrhea.
Storage
Store below 30°C, protect from light.
Do not freeze.
Use maximum for 1 month after open the bottle.
Under recommended storage conditions, a normal darkening of color may occur. This colour change is the characteristic of sugar solution and will not affect the therapeutic action. Prolonged exposure to temperatures above 30°C or to direct sunlight may cause extreme darkening and cloudy colour which may be pharmaceutically objectionable. If this condition occurs, do not use.
