Indications/Uses

Upper & lower resp tract, GUT, skin & soft tissue, bone infections, gonorrhea (non-penicillinase-producing strains), dental abscess (adjunct to surgical management).

Dosage/Direction for Use

Treatment of infection Adult & childn >40 kg Usual dosage: Severe infections: 875 mg 12 hrly or 500 mg 3 times daily. Childn <40 kg 125 mg 3 times daily. More severe infections: 250 mg 3 times daily. Gonorrhea 3 g as single dose. Renal impairment: Adult & childn >40 kg Mild (CrCl >30 mL/min) No change in dose. Moderate (CrCl 10-30 mL/min) Max: 500 mg twice daily. Severe (CrCl <10 mL/min) Max: 500 mg daily. Ped susp Severe or recurrent otitis media Childn 3-10 yr 750 mg twice daily for 2 days as an alternative course of treatment.

Overdosage

Contraindications

Hypersensitivity to penicillins, cephalosporins & other β-lactams.

Special Precautions

Previous hypersensitivity reactions to penicillins or cephalosporins. Avoid if infectious mononucleosis is suspected. Prolonged use. Patients with renal impairment. Periodically monitor renal, hepatic & hematopoietic function in long-term use. Amoxil Forte: Discontinue if allergic reaction occurs. Glandular fever. Pregnancy & lactation.

Adverse Reactions

Diarrhoea, nausea, vomiting; skin rash, urticaria, pruritus. Amoxil Forte: Hypersensitivity reactions, severe allergic reactions including angioneurotic edema, anaphylaxis; moderate increase in AST/ALT.

Probenecid; OCs, allopurinol, anticoagulants.
